The National Library of Montenegro "Đurđe Crnojević" bids a heartfelt farewell to Bogić Rakočević, poet, essayist, literary critic, and former Director of the institution, who passed away yesterday at the age of 64.
Bogić Rakočević was born in 1962 in Mojkovac. He completed his primary education in Mojkovac and Titograd (now Podgorica), where he also attended secondary school.He graduated in Serbo-Croatian Language and Yugoslav Literature from the Faculty of Philosophy in Nikšić, where he also pursued postgraduate studies in the Department of Literature. He additionally completed a programme in General Journalism at the Yugoslav Institute of Journalism in Belgrade. He served as Editor-in-Chief and Secretary of the Literary Youth of Montenegro, editor of the literary programme at the "Budo Tomović" Youth Centre in Podgorica, organiser and editor of the Yugoslav Young Poets Festival "Majska rukovanja", Artistic Director of the International Television Festival in Bar, Artistic Director of the international literary event "Ratkovićeve večeri poezije" in Bijelo Polje, and selector of the international poetry gatherings "Slovo Makovo" in Sarajevo and Mostar. He served on the juries of numerous national and international literary events, was a member of the jury for the state literary award "Miroslavljevo jevanđelje", and a member of the state commission responsible for awarding the status of Distinguished Cultural Creator of Montenegro. He was Editor-in-Chief of "Bibliografski vjesnik", the journal of the Montenegrin Librarians' Association and the National Library of Montenegro "Đurđe Crnojević". He was also a member of the Montenegrin PEN Centre. He published more than three hundred works of literary criticism, as well as studies in literary theory and literary history in newspapers and journals throughout Montenegro and the wider region. He authored numerous books of poetry, prose, essays, and anthologies of Montenegrin poetry. His work is represented in all major selections, surveys, and anthologies dedicated to contemporary Montenegrin literature. His literary works were translated into English, Italian, Romanian, Belarusian, Macedonian, French, Slovenian, Russian, Polish, Albanian, German, and Swedish. He worked at the "Maksim Gorki" Primary School in Podgorica, at the Montenegrin National Theatre as a language editor, and at Radio Television of Montenegro, initially as a radio journalist and subsequently as Editor of the Culture Desk, Editor of Cultural and Arts Programming, Editor of the First Channel, and Editor of Minority Programming. He received first, second, and third prizes at the Yugoslav Young Poets Festival "Majska rukovanja", an award at the Poetry Festival in Zabok, first prize for a short story from the Youth Movement, first prize for a short story awarded by the newspaper Komunist, a poetry award in Požega, recognition for literary achievement from the Cultural and Educational Community of Podgorica, and the international poetry award "Risto Ratković" for the best book of the year. He participated in numerous literary and academic conferences and festivals both in Montenegro and abroad. He was the author of Montenegro's first television anthology of twentieth-century Montenegrin poetry, Poetika Montenegrina, comprising thirty half-hour episodes. He was editor and scriptwriter of documentary films about writers: Ćamil Sijarić (Bajkoviti pripovjedač), Viktor Vida (Svemir osobe), Sait Orahovac (Vihori uzdaha), Avdo Međedović (Homer sa Obrova), Husein Bašić (Od sunca ogrlica), Ismet Rebronja (Bihorski lirik), Zaim Azemović (Pamet je u narodu), Frano Alfirević (Bokeški melanholik), and Ivan Antun Nenadić (Pisac emotivnih uznesenja), as well as films about painters: Petar Lubarda (Jubilej Petra Lubarde), Hilmija Ćatović (Slikar emotivnih uznesenja), and Andrija Maurović (Mag stripa).
