The National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” proudly inherits
the tradition of the Crnojević printing house from 1493, the first
printing house in the South Slavic region. The beginnings of
librarianship in Montenegro are linked to the book list made in the
Cetinje Monastery in 1592.
Today, it represents one of the most important cultural institutions
in Montenegro. Its role is primarily to collect, preserve and enable the
use of Montenegrin written cultural heritage, and it is also the main
library and the carrier of library and information activities in
Montenegro. At the same time, the National Library has grown into an
elite cultural institution whose mission goes beyond its core
activities, with a significant cultural and educational role in the
country and a reputation as a reliable partner on the international
cultural scene.
With its rich holdings containing over two million units of library
materials, the National Library represents the largest information
database available for use in order to improve cultural, educational and
scientific research work, as well as the overall social and cultural
development of Montenegro.
Modern information trends have made it easier for librarians to
organize and process information and have brought libraries into our
homes through electronic catalogs and digital collections, without
diminishing the importance of the library profession and its role. New
business models and user services, in accordance with the principle of
universal accessibility, enable the active participation of the National
Library in creating the cultural and educational environment of
Montenegro, while simultaneously developing international cooperation
and the exchange of knowledge and digital content.
