105 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF MIHAILO LALIĆ MARKED AT NLM

105 since the birth of Mihailo Lalić, a well-known Montenegrin writer, was marked last night at the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojevic” in Cetinje.

Rajko Cerović, literary critic and publicist spoke about Lalić’s life and work and he pointed out that we as Montenegrins, but in the same time readers and admirers of Lalić's work, have to be aware of the deep wisdom he has left us, as well as the lessons and testimonies of the national individuality of our people.

“No one has as strongly as he proved the authenticity of the existence of this people, because no sentence in his literature relates to anything that happens outside Montenegro, everything is in Montenegro and in the Montenegrin experience”, said Cerović.

Speaking about Lalić's work, he characterized him as a unique and magnificent writer, who created the magic, wealth and beauty in his works that the reader will encounter, but also as someone who awakened his people, that is, turned them to consciousness towards themselves.

It is best expressed in novels: “Ratna sreća”, “Zatočnici”, “Dokle gora zazeleni” and “Gledajući dolje na drumove”, said Cerović and added that we would become a true people only on the day when we would understand all the extent of Lalić's art, as well as all the extent of his lessons to us Montenegrins.

After the speech of Mr. Cerović, it was shown a documentary from the series “Circles of Literature” created by the Television of Montenegro and dedicated to Lalić, whose author was Nela Savković Vukčević, MA.

Mihailo Lalić was born in Trepča near Andrijevica on October 7, 1914. He’s known by the series of novels that describe events in Montenegro during the Second World War. He published his first book, a collection of poems “Staze slobode” in Cetinje in 1948.

His works have been translated into several foreign languages, including Bulgarian, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Russian, Romanian, Lithuanian, Danish, German and English.

He was the first winner of the Njegoš’s Award for the novel “Lelejska Gora” in 1963. He received NIN Award for the novel “Ratna sreća” in 1973. In 1962 he received July 21 Award, the highest recognition of Berane municipality, on the year when the award was established, and novel “Hajka” has got October Award by the City of Belgrade.

According to his book “Svadba” it was made the screenplay for the film of the same name. In addition, his novels “Lelejska gora” and “Hajka” were screened.

Apart from the mentioned works, he has published the following short stories: “Izvidnica”, “Prvi snijeg”, “Na mjesečini”, “Posljednje brdo”, as well as the novels: “Zlo proljeće”, “Raskid”, “Pramen tame”, “Ratna sreća”, “Zatočnici”, “Dokle gora zazeleni”, “Gledajući dolje na drumove” and “Odlučan čovjek”.

He died in Belgrade on December 30, 1992.
