EXHIBITION OF OLD BOOKS, MAPS AND POSTCARDS ABOUT ALBANIA

“Cultural Heritage - the Meeting Point of Peoples and Countries”: exhibition of old books, maps and postcards about Albania, Tirana, September 10,2025

As part of the manifestation “Montenegrin Cultural Week in Albania”, the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” presented an exhibition of old books, maps and postcards depicting Albania entitled “Cultural Heritage - the Meeting Point of Peoples and Countries”. The exhibition was officially opened in the National Library of Albania on September 10, 2025, and the directors of the two national institutions, Dragica Lompar and Piro Misha, addressed the audience.

At the opening of the exhibition, director Lompar pointed out: “Cultural heritage is a witness to the past and a guide for understanding our own history, culture and tradition, on which we continue to create new knowledge and interpretations. Cultural heritage is also a universal determinant that connects the past with future times and generations based on true values. Libraries play an invaluable role in this sense, constantly showing how important everything that is written down and preserved in them is."

NLM “Đurđe Crnojević” holds a large number of works about Albania and works in the Albanian language, which proves that literature and culture have built the most beautiful bridges between our peoples. Montenegro and Albania can proudly present to the world their written heritage, their national and cultural identity, but also their centuries-old brotherly relations, full of mutual understanding and respect. In this spirit, the exhibition that we are presenting today in your National Library, symbolically connects the present with the past and opens the possibility of new cultural ties and future cooperation.

The exhibition of old books, maps and postcards about Albania, entitled “Cultural Heritage - the Meeting Point of Peoples and Countries”, includes selected copies from several collections that are kept in the National Library in Cetinje and testify to the cultural and linguistic diversity of Montenegro throughout its thousand-year existence.

It also represents the common cultural memory of Montenegro and Albania, as well as the commitment of librarians to the preservation and accessibility of the written heritage of all national communities in Montenegro.

Therefore, the manifestation of the Montenegrin Cultural Week in Albania, in which we are participating for the second time, shows how important such events are for strengthening cultural ties and a better understanding of the Montenegrin and Albanian people and their peculiarities".

The authors of the exhibition are Danijela Radulović and Dragica Lompar, and it was designed by Sandra Đurović.

The member of the official delegation from Montenegro was Ardita Rama, manager of the “Mirko Srzentić” Public Library in Ulcinj. The opening was attended by Pavle Karanikić, chargé d'affaires at the Embassy of Montenegro in Tirana, Danilo Mrvaljević, director of the State Archives of Montenegro and Marinko Ćulafić, president of the National Community of Montenegrins in Albania.

A special part of the event was the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation, which provided guidelines for the improvement of future cooperation between NLM “Đurđe Crnojević” and the National Library of Albania.
