The exhibition was organized by the Berane Cultural Center in cooperation with the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević" from Cetinje, as part of the five-day event “Duke Gavro Vuković’s Week”.While opening the exhibition, Dragica Lompar, Director of the National Library of Montenegro, pointed out that the exhibition presents a selection of texts from the original materials kept by the Library in Cetinje. These are translations of works by Sommier, Štiglic, Kolo, Rovinski, Wilkinson, Evans, Valentineli, Kovaljevski, Lenorman, Hasert, Kuba, Holeček... and others, who have made an exceptional contribution to the study of our history and culture.
“Books about Montenegro and Montenegrins published in the past in foreign languages testify to the interest of the European cultural public in the small Balkan state, an active participant in all political, dynastic and diplomatic turmoil at the turbulent crossroads of West and East. Foreign explorers and travel writers have been coming to Montenegro to discover an authentic and unique world in the heart of Europe, which until then was completely unknown to them. Thanks to their works, Europe and the world gained an idea of a country with a strong tradition, its struggle for freedom, and natural beauty. Their descriptions were not always completely accurate, sometimes they were too romantically colored, sometimes they were an expression of misunderstanding of our specific mentality. To foreigners, Montenegro looked like a country that amazes and confuses at the same time, full of hard life and poverty, but always ready for sincere hospitality” - said Lompar, emphasizing that the exhibition presents a selection of their works on 28 panels. Countries of the authors are marked at the top of each panel.
On behalf of the organizers, the attendees were greeted by Goran Lalević, head of cultural, artistic and performing arts activities at the Cultural Center, who highlighted the good cooperation of this institution with the National Library of Montenegro.
The author of the exhibition is library consultant Milenija Vračar.
