NLM RECEIVED AMENDMENT TO DUŠAN GVOZDENOVIĆ'S LEGACY AS A GIFT

On September 26, 2022, the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” received a valuable gift, consisting of monographs (379) and periodicals (13 titles) from the Gvozdenović family, which were a part of the personal library of Dušan Gvozdenović, a distinguished Montenegrin publicist and university professor. During his lifetime, Dušan Gvozdenović donated a large part of his personal library to NLM, which has the status of a legacy, so with this gift, that legacy is completed. Respecting the wishes of Dušan Gvozdenović, the gift was presented to NLM by Mr. Petar Gvozdenović, his nephew. NLM would like to use this occasion to express its warmest thanks to the Gvozdenović family.

Dušan Gvozdenović was born in Vučji Dol, in Ćeklići, near Cetinje, in 1917. He attended high school in Cetinje, Kotor and Belgrade, studying mathematics and physics. He graduated from the Mathematics Department at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade in 1946. He started his career as a professor of mathematics and physics at the Gymnasium and Higher Pedagogical School in Cetinje, and then at the Technical and Mechanical Faculty of the University of Montenegro in Titograd and Podgorica. He is the author of many geometry and mathematics textbooks for elementary schools and colleges, as well as numerous professional and scientific works in these areas.

Dušan Gvozdenović was also an active participant in many social events of the 20th century. He was registered as a volunteer of the International Brigade for the Spanish Civil War (1936), but due to circumstances he did not participate in it. However, he was an active participant in the preparation of the Thirteenth of July Uprising in Montenegro, as well as the National Liberation War in Yugoslavia. He spent part of his life working on the African continent, in the Republic of Congo and Burundi, as a teacher of mathematics and physics. He was fluent in French, English and Russian. After living and working in African countries, he was declared a United Nations expert in mathematics and physics, the only one from the area of former Yugoslavia. In the nineties of the 20th century, he was the founder and active participant of organizations and associations that dealt with the preservation of Montenegrin identity, the Montenegrin PEN Center, the Society of Admirers of the Petrović-Njegoš Dynasty, the Association for the Restoration of the Autocephalous Montenegrin Orthodox Church. He died in 1993 and was buried, according to his own wish, in his native village.

The legacy of D. Gvozdenović consists of 1,602 monographic publications and 65 magazine titles, i.e. 662 issues and 4 insertions to periodical publications. This legacy does not have the character of diversity, because all the publications that make it up are from the fields of mathematics and physics and their related disciplines. This is precisely its greatest value, because professional literature from these fields is gathered and presented in one place. The publications are mostly in foreign languages, French, Russian, English, Italian, and a smaller part of the publications are in the South Slavic languages.

The legacy also includes a valuable manuscript by D. Gvozdenović, which has not been published until today. It refers to the importance of G. Galileo's work and his contribution to mathematics and astronomy.

Monographic publications of Dušan Gvozdenović's legacy are available to users via the NLM electronic catalogue, and periodicals via a card file.
