85 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF PAVLE ĐONOVIĆ

On Friday, March 15, the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” marked 85 years since the birth of prominent writer and fellow citizen, Pavle Đonović.

Valentina Belada i Anja Mirković, students of Gymnasium Cetinje, introduced us to the story by reciting verses of his poem “Obnavljanje sebe”, proudly and with smiles, as Đonović was a professor at that school.

His friends and connoisseurs of his work Marko Špadijer, Boško Mijanović and M.A. Ethem Mandić spoke about his life and creative work.

Recalling the life of Pavle Đonović, they agreed that he left an indelible mark in Montenegrin culture and literature.

“He was an unrepeatable dreamer and poet, a versatile person, a cordial and educated man, a professor, a poet, director of a national cultural institution, a connoisseur of literature and history and as such he was the man for the cultural representation of the city”, Špadijer said.

However, under that official facade, Špadijer pointed out, was hidden a man who liked to beautify reality, and it can be said that he was someone who painted the reality using his imagination.

According to M.A. Mandić, the poetry of Pavle Đonović is an unusual event in Montenegrin literature and art, the singular voice that fascinates us with its strangeness and difference in relation to the poetic trends at the time he was creating, even from the perspective of today"s criticism.

Boško Mijanović, a friend of Đonović, said that with his departure Cetinje lost a part of its soul, since he, with his work and being, gave a part of himself to this town.

Đonović was born in 1934. He published books of poems: “Umrli šetač” in 1956, “Ružni bogovi” in 1962 and “Mornarske elegije” in 1968. He prepared a book of Montenegrin folk humor “Dim u dim”, which was printed within the edition “Luča” of the Graphic Bureau in Titograd. After that, it was published in three editions with more than 20,000 copies.

His book “Drače” was published in 2001 and it is a selection of humorous stories that have been published in “Cetinjski list”. Đonović has also published numerous works in periodicals. He received several awards and recognitions, among which the Order of Labour with Golden Wreath, life achievement award at the Days of Humor and Satire in Danilovgrad and posthumously the “Ivan Crnojević” Charter. His collected works were published under the title “Zbog jedne krive kletve” in edition of “Dignitas” from Cetinje.

He died in Cetinje in 2002.
