CNL “DJURDJE CRNOJEVIC” – FULL CENL MEMBER AND PARTNER ON TEL PROJECT

The Central National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” became the full partner of the most significant project of all national libraries of Europe “The European Library” (TEL). The main aims of the TEL project are the establishment of a common electronic catalogue of national libraries of Europe and the development of a digital European library as a repository of European cultural heritage.

This project is being implemented within the Conference of the European National Librarians – CENL, established with the aim of increasing and reinforcing the role of national libraries in Europe. Jelena Đurović, CNL “Đurđe Crnojević” director, signed the agreement for the Montenegrin national library to join the Conference and thus became the full CENL member.Since 3rd January 2006 the Conference of the European National Librarians as an international NGO enjoys the status of a participant to the Council of Europe. This came as a result of many years of professional activities of the CNL “Đurđe Crnojević“, in particular in the area of international cooperation and as an acknowledgement for the efforts invested towards becoming a full member to such a significant initiative. By signing the Agreement, Jelena Đurović, director of the Central National Library, gained the right to participate in the election of candidates and be elected to CENL bodies and commissions. The European Library (www.theeuropeanlibrary.org) is a portal for accessing electronic catalogues and digital collections of the European national libraries, set as of 1st February 2001 to provide free access to European knowledge and culture, and promote diversity and richness of holdings held by national libraries. From 2001-2004 the project was supported by the European Commission, and since 2005 the national libraries, as full members to the project, join in its financing.By the end of 2008, 44 national libraries will have become full CENL members and their collections will be searchable via The European Library portal. The initial cooperation of the CNL “Đurđe Crnojević” with TEL will pertain to technical aspects of including our electronic catalogue in the joint European electronic catalogue. With the implementation of the digitalisation project, the most important old Montenegrin books and periodicals will be accessible via Internet to the widest public.
