COMPLETION OF PHASE I OF THE CNL RECONSTRUCTION AND OPENING OF THE NATIONAL COBISS CENTRE FOR MONTENEGRO

The Central National Library of Montenegro “Đurde Crnojević” organised at Cetinje, on 1st July 2008 the ceremony to celebrate the completion of the works within the phase I of the reconstruction, remedial works and adaptation of the Library Building and opening of a  functional Montenegrin COBISS Centre.

The restoration works commenced in late 2006 with the donation from the Government of the Kingdom of Norway in the value of €414,000. The Government of the Republic of Slovenia donated the total of some €200,000 for the development and equipping of the Montenegrin COBISS Centre.Over the past years, the Central National Library “Đurde Crnojević”, as Montenegrin national library, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Media, has been striving to modernise the library operation by introducing state-of-the-art IT.To that effect, the Montenegrin COBISS Centre is perceived as being of paramount importance for the development of overall Montenegrin library activity, and for Montenegrin culture, science and education in general, as preconditions for the development of the information society. It is the task of the Centre to extend the required professional, technical and educational support to Montenegrin libraries in order for them to be included in the common library information system on the cooperative basis. To date the total of 24 libraries have been networked, becoming a part of the regional COBISS.Net gathering over 500 libraries.The speakers at the ceremony were Prof. Branislav Mićunović, Montenegrin Minister of Culture, Sport and Media, Jelena Đurović, director of the Central National Library “Đurde Crnojević”, and on behalf of the donors, H.E. Haakon Blankenborg, the ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Belgrade and Mojca Kuder Dolinar, the Slovenian Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology.
