A three-day international SEEDI conference on Digitization of Cultural Heritage, held at Cetinje from 13-15 September 2007, has lived up to the expectations. The total of 29 noteworthy papers were presented, prepared for the conference by 47 digitalisation specialists from the countries of South East Europe and the world.
The matters and issues of digitization of cultural heritage were seen from several aspects. Different models, standards and software have been presented, as well as state-of-the-art technologies in creating digital recordings, depending on the type of monument material: old books and periodicals, manuscripts, records, geographic maps, archive materials, etc. The organiser has enabled the participants to see presentations by four international experts: John Van Oudenaren, Giuliana De Francesco, Georgios Markakis and Matthew Driscoll.Apart from the level of papers presented, the quality of the conference is reflected in large presence of participants from all former Yugoslav republics, thus opening the opportunity for cooperation and work on joint projects in the region. The interest and the desire to carry out cooperation in various areas have been recognised, and some specific proposals for future joint projects have been tabled.By organising this conference Montenegro has officially become the member to SEEDI initiative. All participants commended on the significance of the event and the richness of cultural heritage in Montenegro. As the organiser and the host of the event, the Central National Library „Đurđe Crnojević” lived up to the task. After the presentations, the conference participants had the opportunity to visit institutions of culture at Cetinje to assure themselves of the richness of cultural heritage and natural beauties of Montenegro.
