Towards the implementation of the stage II of the Montenegrin Virtual Library project, 14 new libraries signed the Full Membership Agreement for joining the unique library information system COBISS.CG, and these are: 10 public libraries in the municipalities Bar, Berane, Bijelo Polje, Budva, Cetinje, Herceg Novi, Kolašin, Kotor, Nikšić and Pljevlja; 2 specialised libraries –the Library of the Historic Institute of Montenegro and the Library of the Clinical Centre of Montenegro; one higher education library – Library of the Faculty of Medicine in Podgorica and one secondary school library – Library of the Secondary Vocational School “Ivan Uskoković” from Podgorica).
From the funds appropriated by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for international development aid to libraries in the COBISS.Net, the Institute for Information Sciences from Maribor (IZUM) provided the necessary computer equipment to these libraries as well as the University Library in Podgorica. The equipment provided depended on its size, number of qualified staff, as well as the internet access at the premises. The total value of the donation is EUR48,000.The ongoing reconstruction, adaptation and restoration of the building of the Central National Library “Đurđe Crnojević” envisages the development and equipping of a separate room for the needs of the Montenegrin COBISS Centre – a library information service within the COBISS.CG system. To that purpose IZUM provided a substantial amount of EUR78,000, in order for the intended works to be implemented by the end of 2007.In 2007 libraries were co-financed for the costs of developing bibliographies of scientists and researchers, the costs of the participation of 24 librarians to the COBISS 2007 conference in Maribor were covered, and for 10 candidates tuition fee will be covered for specialisation in the area of librarian sciences, totalling EUR34,000.These donations, in the total amount of EUR160,000, are vital for the operation and development of the COBISS.CG system, and thus for the enhancement of library activity in Montenegro. The Republic of Slovenia similarly assists the libraries in other countries in the region which accepted COBISS organisational model and programme equipment (cooperative online bibliographic system ad service) for library automation and networking. The COBISS.Net will soon include 500 libraries from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Macedonia and Serbia.
