The First ISBN Regional Workshop was held on June 8 and 9 at the National Library of Albania in Tirana. Montenegrin delegates were Jelena Đurović, director of the Central National Library “Djurdje Crnojevic” and the head of the National ISBN Agency, Sanja Martinovic. The Central National Library “Djurdje Crnojevic” has been a member of the International ISBN Association since 2005. The same year the National ISBN Agency for Montenegro was established, which has been independently awarding ISBN codes for publishers from the territory of Montenegro since then.In late 2006, at the 34th Annual Conference of ISBN Agencies, held in Paris, at the request of CNB “Djurdje Crnojevic”, Montenegro got its prefix 9940, as the country code. It started to be implemented as of January 2007, together with the 13-digit ISBN number. The First ISBN Regional Workshop dealt with the basis and the scope of the ISBN system, the role of the International ISBN Agency, its powers, the production of barcodes, the role of metadata and copyrights. Additionally, the experiences of national ISBN agencies from the countries in the region related to the transfer from 10-digit to 13-digit ISBN codes with 978 as the initial book prefix were presented. Special emphasis was given to the development of PIID, (Publishers’ International ISBN Directory). The 2008 directory of Montenegrin publishers was used as the illustration of this topic. The cooperation of publishers with ISBN agencies is paramount for their successful operation and marketing of publications, since it enables faster and more efficient ordering and distribution within and outside the country. ISBN is given precedence in electronic sales systems in bookshops, done mostly via this standard number. At the end of the two-day workshop, Mr Brian Green handed the certificates of successful completion of ISBN training to the participants.
