National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević”, in cooperation with the National Library of Serbia and the Embassy of Montenegro in Belgrade organized the exhibition of the map of prints “Oktoih 1494-2014” in the National Library of Serbia. It is a graphic map created by Dimitrije Popovic and published by the National Library on occasion of marking the 520th anniversary of printing Oktoih pravoglasnik, the first Cyrillic book among the South Slavs.
Laslo Blašković, Acting Director of the National Library of Serbia, Jelena Đurović, Director of the Montenegrin National Library and Pavle Goranović, Minister of Culture of Montenegro spoke at the opening of the exhibition, while Branislav Mićunović, Ambassador of Montenegro in Belgrade officially opened the exhibition on October 30.On the same day, the National Library bestowed one copy of bibliophile edition of the map of prints “Oktoih 1494-2014” to the National Library of Serbia. Director Jelena Đurović handed the gift to the Acting Director of the National Library of Serbia, Laslo Blašković.At the opening of the exhibition, Ambassador Branislav Mićunović said that “Oktoih 1494-2014” by Dimitrije Popović is a modern homage to the first Montenegrin book and also a masterpiece of typographic art and graphic design.Minister Goranović said that, in spite of difficult circumstances during the reign of all dynasties, the books in Montenegro remained a powerful witness to the adoption of the most important symbols of civilization.– Today Montenegrin culture tends to such values. Montenegrin authors are proud heirs of a long and rich tradition, which has been caused by the invention of the printing press and the awareness of the importance of books in fostering and promotion of the rich multicultural identity of Montenegro – said Minister Goranović.The director of the Montenegrin National Library Jelena Đurović said that the Crnojević printing house marked not only the history of medieval culture in Europe, but the world, and the fact that the fragments of Oktoih are today kept in museums, libraries and monasteries around the world confirms this.– Printing of books in a small Montenegro at the end of the fifteenth century, torn between the wars and famines, is a true curiosity and from the historical distance of five centuries it overshadows more famous and influential publishing ventures of larger and richer European countries at the very beginning of the Gutenberg era – said Đurović.The map of prints “Oktoih 1494-2014” consists of ten art prints and six graphics integrated in the form of art book. Graphics were inspired by the letters that form the name “Oktoih” and they were artistically and symbolically interpreted by the artist Dimitrije Popović. The map of prints “Oktoih 1494-2014” was printed in hundred of numbered copies, with each sheet signed by the artist.This art project so far has been successfully presented in Zagreb, Brussels and Ljubljana.
