On Monday, February 27, the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” marked, through sequence of activities, 170 years since the publication of “The Mountain Wreath”.
Opening of an exhibition of old and rare editions and translations of “The Mountain Wreath”, as well as posters printed on various occasions related to this work took place at 12am at the ceremonial hall of the Library. The exhibition was opened by the director of the National Library, Mr. Bogić Rakocevic, who pointed out the importance of “The Mountain Wreath” from several aspects.
After the welcome words by the director, the audience was addressed by Slobodan Marunović, actor of the National Theatre of Montenegro, who spoke excerpts from Njegoš’s works. This part of the ceremony was especially designed for students of Cetinje’s schools, who in large numbers visited the exhibition.
In the second part of the program a documentary film was played, prepared by the National Library on the occasion of this important anniversary. After the film, PhD Sonja Tomović Šundić held her oration on Njegoš and “The Mountain Wreath”. As she emphasized: “Njegoš is the most comprehensive thought and language of Montenegro, he is a synthesis of our philosophical and literary heritage, he is our highest value and the source of value, he is our tradition and the source of tradition, he is our ticket to European culture worthy of poets like Homer, Goethe and Dante.”
