Today, a promotion of the monograph The First Library of Accessible Formats 2006–2026 by Mr Aleksandar Ćuković was held at the National Library of Montenegro, National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević”.
On behalf of the National Library, librarian Suzana Marjanović welcomed the audience, stating that the monograph is a significant publication which systematically and thoroughly documents two decades of work by the Library for the Blind of Montenegro “Vojislav Minić”.
“This publication provides an overview of the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the institution, its development, and the path by which it evolved into a modern library centre specialising in accessible library formats. For people with visual impairments and others who are unable to use standard printed materials, books play a vital role in compensating for the lack of sight, thereby significantly enhancing their integration into society. Since its establishment, the Library has demonstrated that its mission extends beyond the scope of traditional library services. In addition to its primary task of providing materials in accessible formats, the institution has become a pioneer in the creation of inclusive cultural content.”
Suzana Marjanović also quoted Alberto Manguel, the Argentine-Canadian essayist and novelist, who described his time spent with the blind Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges in his book With Borges:
“Borges does not speak so much about being friends with the writers he knows; rather, he speaks of being their reader, as though they belong not to the everyday world but to the world of books. Even in the realm of friendship, the role of the reader takes precedence. The reader, not the writer.”
On behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Media, Dobrila Vlahović, Director General of the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, addressed the audience.
The promotion also featured speeches by Zdravko Vukčević, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Library of Accessible Formats “Vojislav Minić”, and Božidar Denda, Director of the institution.
