The promotion of the photo type edition of the handwritten Cetinje
Psalter from the 15th century, organized by Matica Crnogorska and the
National Library of Montenegro will take place in Cetinje on Tuesday,
November 25 at 6 p.m. Speakers at the promotion will be Božidar
Šekularac, historian and author of the foreword, editors Dragica Lompar,
director of NLM “Đurđe Crnojević” and Ivan Ivanović, general secretary
of Matica Crnogorska and Ivan Jovović, president of Matica Crnogorska.
The digitized version of the “Cetinje Psalter” was made possible by
the National and University Library from Zagreb (NSK), which keeps this
manuscript under the signature R-3349, and it was published as a
co-publishing project of Matica Crnogorska and the National Library of
Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević”.
According to the watermarks on the paper, the manuscript of the “Cetinje Psalter” dates back to the first quarter of the 15th
century and it was written in one of the scriptoriums on Lake Skadar
near the end of the reign of the Balšić dynasty in 1421. At that time,
these Montenegrin rulers strongly supported the transcribing of
liturgical manuscript books in the scriptoriums of the monasteries of
the Skadar basin, as stated in the preface of the editors.
The Cetinje Psalter is one of the first manuscript books brought to
the library of the newly founded Cetinje Monastery as the cathedral of
the already official Montenegrin Orthodox Church and the center of
Montenegrin literacy from the end of the 15th century.
The edition is accompanied by an afterword in Montenegrin and English
by Božidar Šekularac, who performed the codicological description of
this manuscript and who was of great help during the realization of the
entire project. The importance of the Psalter, as a book of psalms, is
best explained by the fact that the number of its editions is greater
than the entire number of all other liturgical books of the 15th- and 16th centuries.
