NLM RECEIVED A PRIMER FROM 1883 AS A GIFT

On September 4th, Mrs. Anđelka Pavić visited National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević”  and on that occasion presented the director Dragica Lompar with a valuable gift - the original edition of Primer for Montenegrin schools from 1883,  written by Stevo Čuturilo. The primer was published in Pančevo and it is an edition of Jovanović Brothers’ Bookstore.

Anđelka Pavić has been studying the life and works of Stevo Čuturilo for almost a decade and writes about the primers of Stevo Čuturilo, which were in official use in today's Montenegro, Lika, Herzegovina and Serbia for almost fifty years and from which many generations of pupils became literate. She paid special attention to the already mentioned “Primer for Montenegrin schools”, which was compiled by Stevo Čuturilo in 1879, when he was the chief school supervisor in Montenegro.

Stevo Čuturilo was an important writer and educator from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in Dabar, in Lika. He first stayed in Montenegro as a lecturer at the Maritime School in Boka Kotorska, and then Prince Nikola hired him to be the chief school supervisor in Cetinje, where he also worked as the editor of “Glas Crnogorca” (“The Voice of Montenegrin”). He was also a war reporter from the battle of Vučji Dol.

The National Library hereby expresses its public gratitude to Mrs. Anđelka Pavić.
