EXHIBITION “WEALTH OF COLOUR AND TRADITION” IN SOFIA

Exhibition entitled “Wealth of colour and tradition”, organized by the National Library of Bulgaria “St. Cyril and Methodius” was opened in Sofia on November 9. The National Library of Montenegro was one of the participants, along with the national libraries of Romania, Serbia, Georgia, Croatia and the host Bulgaria.

The exhibition featured photographs and illustrations of traditional costumes, and the goal was to highlight the wealth of embroidery and colours that adorn these clothing items. The exhibition was opened by the director of the National Library of Bulgaria, Mrs. Krasimira Aleksandrova.

Dragica Lompar, director of NLM, also spoke at the opening and pointed out that: “Montenegro is a small country in terms of its area, but it is very rich in diverse traditions in the production and manner of clothing of both the Montenegrin and other peoples who live on its territory. The creativity and complexity of different ethnic communities, which were created as an expression of cultural, ethnic and religious identity, were shown through folk costumes and handicrafts. That wealth is integrated into the unique whole of the cultural and historical heritage of Montenegro.” The event was also attended by ambassadors and chargé d'affaires of the participating countries.

The audience was very interested in the folk costumes from different parts of Montenegro shown in the photographs, and the impression was completed by the exhibits in the form of parts of the female Montenegrin costumes that the representatives of the NLM brought to Sofia thanks to the hospitality of the Culture and Art Society “Njegoš” from Cetinje.

The exhibition was preceded by presentations of special collections within each of the national libraries of the participating countries, so the collections of our library were presented to fellow librarians by Slađana Sjekloća, coordinator for international cooperation at NLM.

Among other things, this was another opportunity for librarians to exchange experiences and knowledge, since they visited the National Library of Bulgaria and got acquainted with its departments, activities and business methods. The work of the conservation department of the Library attracted special attention.

The National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” got the photos shown at the exhibition from the National Museum of Montenegro, i.e. the Ethnographic Museum, to which we also express special gratitude.
