INFORMATION ON MONTENEGRIN PUBLISHING PRODUCTION FROM “OCTOECHOS” TO THE PRESENT SYSTEMATIZED AND STANDARDIZED (Montenegrin Bibliography of Monographs 1494 - 2023)

National bibliographies arise from the desire to present the entire spiritual creativity of a nation, expressed through the form of the printed word or in another form. They represent a unique source of information for the study and research of all areas of social life.

Bearing in mind that national - retrospective and ongoing bibliographies represent the scientific and cultural needs of every developed society, the National Library of Montenegro launched in 1979 a Retrospective Montenegrin Bibliography project, in order to find in one place everything that has been published in Montenegro and about its people in our and foreign languages. It covers a period of half a millennium: from the first printed Cyrillic book in this part of Europe, “Octoechos of the First Voice” from the Crnojević printing house, i.e. from 1494 to 1994.

In addition to the retrospective, NLM “Đurđe Crnojević”, as a national bibliographic center, creates and publishes current Montenegrin bibliographies of monographs (books) and articles from periodicals and anthologies.

Work on the Current Bibliography of monographs began in 2002. They are published in annual volumes based on Montenegrin publishing and printing production. At the beginning, five volumes were published in printed form, namely: for 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, after which they were published in electronic format.

However, the period from the cut-off year of the Retrospective Montenegrin Bibliography project, i.e. from 1994, to the beginning of the creation of current bibliographies of monographic publications in 2002, remained unfinished. With the additional involvement and effort of employees, the National Library managed to bring this complex and demanding work to an end. The publishing and printing production of our country was also bibliographically processed for the missing years, so that the total number of bibliographic units for monographic editions is over 81,000.

With great pride and satisfaction, we can state that with this approach, enormous desire and work, we have managed to unify the Retrospective and Current bibliography of monographs in a time span of 530 years (15 volumes as printed and 28 as electronic editions), which is something that only rare countries with incomparably greater traditions, financial and technical capabilities can boast about.
